Moriah's Science Department prides itself on its diverse curriculum, which surpasses the traditional subjects of Chemistry, Geology, Biology and Physics. Students explore the role of Science within our society and how it interacts with, and touches on, our everyday lives.

In Years 7 – 10, Science is a compulsory core subject, taught in a practical, hands-on way. By catering for a range of interest and ability levels, students are given the opportunity to experience the principles they are learning through:

  • Investigations
  • Demonstrations
  • Field trips
  • Use of Digital Technology

A range of diverse teaching processes are employed, focusing on:

  • Skill development
  • Experimental design
  • Research
  • Technological integration
  • Group work

Enrichment classes are in place for students in Years 9 and 10, in which students are extended in particular areas of interest and much of the learning is individual, student-based investigation and research. These students are also invited to participate in Gifted and Talented workshops, excursions and competitions.

Science students in Years 11 & 12 are given the opportunity to explore areas as diverse as:

  • Biotechnology
  • Space
  • Environmental issues

The aim is to equip students to function in a world where scientific ideas are at the forefront, and to make them aware of career paths in these areas. Students are exposed to a wide range of guest speakers, excursions to universities and first-hand investigations including an individual student research project.

All Science students are encouraged to participate in local and national co-curricular activities such as quizzes and competitions. The Science department enjoys a fine reputation in these areas and boasts a long tradition of success.
