Gifted/Special Needs

Gifted and Talented (G&T) Program

Aiming for academic excellence and catering for the needs of all students is the underpinning of Gifted Education within the school. Our G&T Program is designed to meet the learning requirements of gifted and talented students in a variety of situations.

The Gifted Program incorporates the understanding that giftedness can often be accompanied by unique characteristics in the intellectual, social and emotional domains, which often need to be addressed on an individual basis.

In the Middle School, Gifted and Talented students have many opportunities to develop.  We offer an "O.C." style Academically Selective Class in Year 6 and group gifted students together in Years 7 and 8.

In the Academically Selective Class students are offered an appropriately paced extended curriculum under the direction of the class teacher, an expert in the field of academic extension and enrichment.

In Year 7 and 8, students who show exceptional ability in Mathematics, Science and English may be offered places in the Honours Program, in these subjects.  For more information, see the Honours Program section.

Special Needs Program
This Program reflects Moriah's commitment to cater for students with unique differences. Our ultimate goal is to integrate these students according to their special needs and to ensure that they reach their full potential as individuals.

In order to achieve these aims, separate pathways have been designed to develop the unique abilities of these students. If necessary, differentiation of, and additions to, the existing curriculum are made so that these students have successful, relevant learning experiences.

The education and support team provides a wide variety of services to support the diverse nature of students’ needs, including assessments and a diagnoses. Included in these services are in-class support, alternative and transition programs.

The Honours Program
The Honours Program is unique to Moriah College and supports the College's ethos of academic excellence and meets the individual learning needs of our students.  In Years 7-10 in Mathematics, Science and English, the College offers students of exceptional ability and talent the opportunity to work with like-minded peers to compact and extend the curriculum.  The students who are offered places in these classes have undergone a rigorous series of assessments for entry and show exceptional ability in their results.  The class sizes are small, allowing students who are performing exceptionally well to move and explore curriculum concepts appropriate for students at this level.  The program allows students to cover the regular curriculum more quickly and extend their learning beyond the required grade level.  Students in this program in Mathematics have the opportunity to compact Years 7-10 into three years and begin their HSC study early.
