Gifted/Special Needs

Moriah's Gifted Education Program reflects the College's goal of aiming for academic excellence and catering for the needs of all students, including those who display above average aptitudes. This Program is designed to meet the learning needs of gifted and talented students in a variety of situations.

Identification of gifted and talented students is multifaceted.  We use a variety of methods to try and ensure that children's learning needs are met.  The process is ongoing as children may develop at different rates.  Some of the identification methods include:

  • Standardised Achievements Testing
  • Diagnostic Testing
  • Records of Achievement
  • Teacher and parent nomination
  • Independent Psychometric Testing where appropriate

In High School, the program uses ability grouping, subject acceleration and curriculum differentiation allowing students of special ability to excel in their areas of giftedness and talent.

The Special Education Department at Moriah College operates under the title of Education Support Team (EST).  The EST comprises of:

  • two psychologists
  • five special education teachers
  • two teacher aides.

The main areas of support include:

  • Counselling
  • Academic Support
  • Special Provisions
  • Individual Education Plans (EPs)
  • Life Skills

A specialised Home Room Program is also available for students with high support needs.
